MAYtastic Work!

 We are racing towards the end of school!   Students are working hard in these last few weeks.  

Some ELA students redesigned book covers of their favorite books.  We discussed what went into designing a book cover.  Symbols, colors, characters, placement, and even font style can give clues to what the story may be about.  Here are some fantastic examples. 

                                                     

In some math groups, students have been conquering Critical/Creative Building Challenges.  There was a Paper Tower and Golf Ball Transport Challenge.  

April Showers Bring.... Awesome Activities!

 SAIL friends "traveled" the world by researching countries and learning facts in ELA classes.  We used how to use a new resource to find information.  Students put together slides on their country.  Our mathematicians explored the currency of different countries and what an exchange rate was.  It's interesting what the US $1.00 is worth in other countries!

                                              

SAIL connected our World study with ASPIRE Gorham and met Erin Santana.  She is a Maine graduate who used her passion for travel to become an education coordinator for the Chicago White Sox baseball team.  Some players from our home team, the Portland Sea Dogs, have moved up to the Chicago White Sox team.  She recorded a video for us about her job, schooling, and future travelers' advice.  

"March"ing into Magnificent Work

We started March with Read Across America.  SAIL students participated by reading in the hallway in all the elementary schools.  What a great way to start your day!  

Great Falls and Narrangansett 5th Graders created original math operations.  They shared their vocabulary, rules, and symbols as they taught our class.  Check them out!

4th Graders in ELA wrote summaries using Haiku poetry.  A challenging activity to summarize a book in a creative way.    Here's an example.

Here are some February Highlights!

ELA

5th Graders analyzed the painting, The Scream, by Edvard Munch and wrote a sensory poem.

A Narragansett 4th Grader developed a Super Hero after reading Secret Hero Society and applying it to her own character whose special powers are enforcing the Code of Conduct Principles.  

A Great Falls 4th Grader used her passion for writing poetry to interview Ms. Linda Aldrich, a Maine poet. 

MATH 

Village 4th Graders applied coding principles to create "codes" to move their classmates.   

Great Falls 4th Graders connected fractions to the professional world of a color chemist.  These students created their own color/mixtures explaining the parts of color used.

5th Graders reviewed different math operations, rules, symbols, and language associated with each.  They then took this knowledge to create their unique math operations with rules, symbols, and language.  Here's an example from a student from Narragansett.  Enjoy!

Hello 2022!

2022 is off to a great start! 

Narragansett's 5th Grade students created a Stop Motion Video for Mrs. Sawyer's Career Unit.  CHECK IT OUT!

WHAT CAREERS ARE YOU INTERESTED IN?

4th Grade mathematicians learned about area models.  They also made a connection to archeologists who use this skill.  Archeologists can use area models when planning to excavate a dig site.  After calculating their own dig site using an area model, they searched for "artifacts."  

4th Grade ELA worked on opinion writing about this interesting topic, Should people eat bugs?  The students stated their opinions with thoughtful reasoning.  Well, what do you think?

 

ENDING THE YEAR ON A HIGH NOTE!

SAIL's been busy this month with various activities to keep our brains challenged and our curiosities engaged.  

We analyzed the poem "Bear In There" by Shel Silverstein.  We looked for alliteration examples in the poem and created our own. We finished the lesson by making an origami bear.    

Students at Village are working on prime and composite numbers.  They're writing down a number's factors to determine if it's a prime or composite number.  

5th Graders at Narragansett are working on a special project for Mrs. Sawyer's Social Skills class.  They are creating a Stop Motion video about careers.  

Students at Great Falls participating in the SAIL Study and Research Lab.  They are working hard to investigate a curiosity as they fill out their Discovery Slips.
